Is it Anxiety? Or is it Blood Sugar?

We spend so much time trying to think our way out of anxiety and low mood.
We talk to professionals about our thoughts, we change our routines, and search for mindset shifts.
And yet, we don’t think about what is on our plates.
Mental health doesn't live only in the brain. It's deeply tied to what we eat, mostly through the gut-brain connection. Did you know that a huge portion of your body’s serotonin—the neurotransmitter that keeps your mood steady—is produced in your GUT?
When our bodies lack real nutrients, it shows up in our mood long before it shows up anywhere else.
A few ways this plays out:
- The blood sugar crash: A high-carb, low-protein meal causes blood sugar to spike and then drop. When glucose tanks, your body pumps out cortisol and adrenaline to compensate. That 3 PM wave of sudden panic or irritability? It could be a glucose crash disguised as anxiety.
- The inflammation cycle: Diets heavy in ultra-processed foods drive up inflammation, which directly contributes to brain fog and emotional heaviness.
- Missing nutrients: Your brain needs foundational building blocks—like omega-3s, magnesium, and B-vitamins—to manufacture calming neurotransmitters like GABA. Without them, your stress tolerance tanks.
You can't out-meditate a diet that keeps your body on a rollercoaster causing anxiety.Sometimes supporting your mental health simply starts with feeding your body what it needs to feel safe.
